Union Investment, Frankfurt am Main, Germany
The Chief aspiration of Thomas Emde and his company emdelight GmbH is to present architecture in the correct light without any foreign interference. The assignment for Emde and emdelight this time was to bathe the 20-storey office tower in blue and white, the company's corporate colours. As the Union Investment building is a rather featureless functional building without any design features which would immediately lend themselves to an artistic light installation, this was no easy task for Thomas Emde. He decided to use the parapets as the fundamental element of the night illumination and supplemented these by accenting the soaring edges of the building. For economic reasons it was decided to use a combination of fluorescent light (FL) and LED lights. The facade elements are lit by blue FL lights, the cement-dominated corner areas are floodlit by long-life LED beams. The light installation starts on the first storey with one hundered percent blue light and the proportion of white increases with progressive height. Each storey thus has its own color-specific LED fittings. The switch-on progress is controlled by daylight sensors. The light switches off in stages, so that a true spectacle takes place every evening, attracting a lot of attention to the building and the company.
