Tornado Tower, Doha, Qatar

A Tornado of Glass & Light

Decorated as „Best Tall Building in the Middle East/Africa 2009“ the Tornado Tower appears with a hight of 200meters as a major highlight of the skyline of Dhoa, Quatar.

A building of superlatives containing 52 floors without a single pillar, glazed from the bottom to the top. The tower is in the form of a cylinder which is turned on a longitudinal axes and builds a milestone with regard to both efficiency of energie and space - combined with a matchless versatilety of spatial planning.

Architecturaly clearly defined in transparent shimmering blue this extraordinary construction rises high into the sky. By night an unique choreography of light awakens this faszinating monolith: reflexes of light gliding gently over the tower, elusive like wind and waves, floating over the fassade in fascinating figures. Vibrant and oscillating various planes of colour are formed, finally capturing the entire fassade and enclosing it in glistening colours. An continously revolving caleidoscope of colours allows firstly the whole tower to glow intensly, then secondly reflecting light energeticly, and finally dissolving into a cool magical shimmer.

This light-architectural spectacle turns the Tornado Tower into an unmistakable eye catcher in the night skyline of Doha and under the phantastic starry sky of the Persian Gulf.

With this artistic illumination emdelight created more than just a homage to the unique formal language of this innovative building. Thomas Emde continous with
the architectural concept, transfering it into a new medium. He literally lets it shine resplendently and develops it into a night-time visual adventure. The ever renewing optical design of the buildings structure creates a trully magic captivation for the viewer.

State-of-the-art LED technology allows a highly intensive and at the same time energy saving illumination with the maximum of variety. Especially for the tower emdelight utilizes no less than 540 lamps, containing 27.540 LEDs. These are positioned on the connecting points of the fassades. Every lamp is equipped with five exits for light. Light is cascaded in four directions along the arms of the crosses, the fifth one builds an omnidirectional glowing light point in the center.

The lamp itself along with the entire control system were designed in extreme heavy- duty quality to withstand the extreme temperatures and climatic conditions of the Persian Gulf. The exceptionally intelligent control software has 8,100 channels, organized in 18 “universes”. This allows for an almost limitless number of illuminating options and combinations of patterns in 16.7 million colours.

This illumination system creates a literal tornado of light which erupts on the fassade and transforms this fascinating building each and every night into a shining beacon in the sky over Doha.
